Force applied is acting in the normal direction to the cross section, then the stress is defined as normal force. If the force applied is acting in the tangential direction to the cross-section, then the corresponding stress is called shear stress.

Pressure: It is define as the force which is acted continuously on or against an object by which the force is in contact with it.
